I am Happy About…

09 Oct

271. Volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club tomorrow.

272. YOZA – We saw a very talented lady at the Modern in Waikiki last night.

273. Drinks so expensive (at the Modern) that I had only and felt as perky as a spring daisy this morning.

274. My random friends throughout the day. It’s such a small town, I run into everyone everywhere.

275. Going to Maui for work (even if it’s only one day)

276. Urban Renewal in Kaka’ako and around the island. I happen to like community-friendly neighborhoods.

277. Muffins waiting on my desk first thing in the morning. (Nice coworkers.)

277. HTML5 and CSS3 and Responsive Design and Web Fonts. Web Fonts are cool.

279. Being able to know that it will always be 85 and sunny or 85 and partly cloudy here. Always.

280. Vizualize Me – Another narcissistic way to build an online web presence.

281. I keep getting on those bright, brand new buses.

282. Responsive boilerplates – I’m really digging Bootstrap.

283. Cool pictures of Turkey from my traveling relatives.

Grateful for Music

29 Aug

The 243rd thing that I am grateful for this year is the arrival of my iPod… I just want to point out that I, in my infinite brilliance, packed my messenger bag (the bag that I have lived out of for the last year), and sent it via snail mail without thoroughly checking the pockets. I left my iPod- my teeny tiny, compact MUSIC box in a bag, in a package, for no reason at all, while I traveled thousands of miles, waited in lines, walked in circles with nothing to listen to…

How did people do it in the old days!?

Honestly, missing my mp3 player wasn’t too bad. I’ve been hanging out with Shad talking and listening to him for a month which has been great. I’ve been reading like crazy and I’ve been thinking (which is a process that works differently when you’re not in the music zone). So it’s all good.

However, I am grateful and it is more good luck that the mp3 player arrived on the same day that Shad started his job, because I had to walk to the grocery store all alone and it was nice to rock out to some Fratellis.

Still Being Grateful (27-34)

03 Feb

27. Animals (their existence); biodiversity; being alive to witness a lot of animals before they are extinct. (It’s kind of a dismal thought, but just because I’m focusing on gratitude doesn’t mean I’m lying to myself and all the diverse species are going to live forever and ever.)

28. People who are kind to animals… I always think of Richard Ogust, who, basically, sacrificed his own life to save thousands of endangered turtles by keeping in his own NY apartment. I am grateful for the existence of people who give a damn enough to actually give something up for those who can’t fend for themselves. (It’s actually a very sad story… you can watch about it in this film.)

29. Having a sense of humor; humor

30. Toastmasters - such an affordable, fun and effective way to gain confidence in public speaking

31. Animation – the power of making our own reality. (All storytelling, really.)

32. Music.

33.  Progress in understanding Alzheimer’s. This NYT article explains that the disease actually spreads from “brain cell to brain cell like an infection” through a particular protein.

[This discovery] indicate[s] it may be possible to bring Alzheimer’s disease to an abrupt halt early on by preventing cell-to-cell transmission, perhaps with an antibody that blocks tau [the protein].

34. Women’s Lib – Thanks, ladies of the past (and men who fought with them) for fighting for the rights I have today.

Another One in a Green Dress

05 Jan

Eliza WIP

This is, of course, a work in progress like all of them. She’s in a green dress, like this one but, you know, different, and the original idea came from the Nick Cave (with Kylie Minogue) song,  Where the Wild Roses Grow. This what Eliza looked like in my head, even though she doesn’t look like Kylie Minogue or like a red head who looks like a rose. I guess I was just thinking of red lips.

Anyway, that’s just where the sketch started. I suppose it’s free to end somewhere else. Below, there is a closeup of the current WIP face and below that is the original colored pencil sketch which I thought was good at the time that I drew it, but is now a bit scary. That’s all for today. Thanks for dropping by.
