Colorado in the Springtime

27 Apr

As usual, I am neglecting my blogging duties (to myself, really), and I haven’t really posted anything interesting for awhile. I am now sitting in the United Club at DIA, waiting for my flight back to Honolulu and I’m realizing that this blog of mine is dying a slow and lonely death. It needs reviving.

Side note: When I signed up for the elite United credit card and received two complimentary passes to the exclusive United Club area in the airport, I expected posh, sixties-style decor with mod waitresses in white thigh high boots, serving fancy food and giving foot massages. I’m not saying I’m disappointed with the quiet room and complimentary mini bagels, but I feel like this experience could be slightly improved with a little bit of Mad-Men-izing. Just saying.

Now, back to my ongoing struggle to document something interesting here.

I’ve spent the last week in Denver, sick and cold, but so happy to see family and friends. I’ve eaten at Watercourse (vegan eatery extraordinaire) and it’s sister establishment too many times, Indian food too many times, and food, in general, too many times, considering the customary tradition of only eating food three times per day. I’ve tried to catch up with everyone (although not enough), lasted longer than expected in two chess games with my dad, and eaten matzo ball soup made with vegan margarine and eggs from a happy chicken. I’ve been to Boulder and remembered why Colorado is amazing. I’ve ridden my bike in the snow and in the sun within 24 hours of each other. I’ve also been grocery shopping and remembered that juice and spices don’t cost $15 a bottle everywhere.

Now, I’m excited to get back to tropical paradise.  I’m definitely hitting the beach tomorrow to warm up my bones and hopefully, I’ll be over this damn cold by Monday.

And I realize this is not terribly exciting but I’m just reminding the world that I’m still alive. Once again, I am making a serious attempt to write more when I get home…

One more thing today…

22 Dec

#358. I am so grateful that Hawaiian Airlines let me change my reservation without a fuss after I (in my infinite brilliance) missed the first flight. About an hour ago (more than 12 hours after said flight departed) I realized my mistake. I was able to call them and make the change with no missed flight fees (beyond the standard change fee). I LOVE HAWAIIAN AIRLINES.

It’s so Worth it

Getting up before six is always worth it here.

I am Happy About…

09 Oct

271. Volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club tomorrow.

272. YOZA – We saw a very talented lady at the Modern in Waikiki last night.

273. Drinks so expensive (at the Modern) that I had only and felt as perky as a spring daisy this morning.

274. My random friends throughout the day. It’s such a small town, I run into everyone everywhere.

275. Going to Maui for work (even if it’s only one day)

276. Urban Renewal in Kaka’ako and around the island. I happen to like community-friendly neighborhoods.

277. Muffins waiting on my desk first thing in the morning. (Nice coworkers.)

277. HTML5 and CSS3 and Responsive Design and Web Fonts. Web Fonts are cool.

279. Being able to know that it will always be 85 and sunny or 85 and partly cloudy here. Always.

280. Vizualize Me – Another narcissistic way to build an online web presence.

281. I keep getting on those bright, brand new buses.

282. Responsive boilerplates – I’m really digging Bootstrap.

283. Cool pictures of Turkey from my traveling relatives.

Sunrise/ Sunset

29 Aug

You can catch both every day at their regularly scheduled times…

This is this morning’s sunrise:

This was yesterday’s sunset… it was amazing. The whole sky looked like this.

This is a sunset last week that we walked down to the water to watch.

And this was just a Wednesday on the side of the highway.

Just another day in Honolulu

There was no Photoshop involved in any of these.

Pictures! (Punchbowl & the National Memorial Cemetery)

29 Aug

I’ve made my poor mother wait all day for some pictures and these aren’t even the ones I promised her this morning, but they are pretty nonetheless. The week before last, Shad and I took a hike through what is basically our back yard. This is the Punchbowl Crater and the National Memorial Cemetery.

And the view is not too bad either…

More things to be Grateful for…

09 Aug

So much to say thank you for…

215. We got an amazing deal on a mattress – it was a $1600, incredibly comfortable, pillow top and we got the floor model for $250 because that model has been discontinued.

216. The buses here come when you think about them. Seriously, there are buses going where you want to go ALL THE TIME.

217. Shopping in Chinatown is significantly cheaper than going to a regular grocery store in Denver. Take that, Hawaii sticker shock.

218. We live a 30 minute walk from the beach.

219. It is a 30 minute walk to the forest behind us.

220. Having a regular internet connection! Yay!

221. Our first scheduled visitor (AJ on 8/20!) Woo!

Art is a Process

04 Aug

We have two random hooks, so I decided to make some random art.

Ingredients:

  • 1 piece of cardboard from furniture packaging
  • 1 elastic cord from the tag on Shad’s new interview shoes
  • 1 ballpoint pen
  • more artistic mediums TBD

Directions:

  1. Hang on wall like in the picture below
  2. Start drawing on cardboard (you can see the subtle beginnings in the lower left corner)
  3. Simmer to evolve artwork

I’ll post updates whether this becomes something cool or really bad. The benefit of art like this is that if it’s hideous, it’s easily trashed, replaced, or laughed at. When you come stay with us, you will be required to contribute.

Movin’ on Up

04 Aug

We’re civilized now.

Shad and I are the proud new owners of a table, chairs, and two desk sets. FYI, for your imminent move to Hawaii, City Mill is the place to go for inexpensive, yet decent furniture (Thanks for the tip, Rick!).
